Looking on the Bright Side

On Thursday night last week, I noticed a wet spot on the carpet, and for a moment, I thought our cat, Dante, was going to have to be adopted by a new family. We've had trouble with him peeing outside the litter box in the past, and we've even taken him to the vet and paid over $200 for blood tests that basically told us that there's nothing physically wrong with him (we thought maybe he had diabetes) he's just a naughty kitty. Since then, we've switched litters to this "Cat Attract" cat litter which has some special herb in it that makes the kitties want to pee on it, and we clean out both litter boxes EVERY day. Since we made the switch, Dante has been good, but I've warned Steve that if he pees outside the box ONE MORE TIME...it's "bye bye naughty kitty."
So, the wet spot on the carpet on Thursday night was almost the hearald of doom for the little black bastard, but it turned out that our water heater was leaking. It was too late to call maintenance that night, so I called them on Friday, and they came right out, but it was clear that the water heater was going to have to be replaced, and they didn't have a new one in stock, so it was going to have to wait a day. They had some carpet people come and tear up the carpet and rip out the mat underneath that had gotten soaked, and they set up a fan to dry the carpet out for a couple of days. This plan would have been all well and good except for the fact that the water heater was STILL leaking. I turned off the water leading to the heater, but that bad boy can hold like 40 gallons of water, so it continued to leak the rest of the day Friday, all night Friday night, and all morning Saturday morning. With the padding taken out (nothing to help soak up some of the water), and the wind direction from the fan, it was all set up nicely for a flash-flood into the bedroom. LOVELY! We were pretty much swimming in and out of the bedroom.
The maintenance guy came back Saturday with the promised new water heater, and THEN he drained the water out of the old heater before he removed it. Why this little feat didn't occur on Friday is anybody's guess. Then the carpet guys had to come back and rip up the bedroom carpet and take out the new wet padding (I let them keep all the fish they could catch as well).
Anyway, all's well now. It's a pain in the ass when you have to deal with crap like that, but the maintenance and management here in this apartment complex has really been very good. And, on the bright side, Dante gets to stay with us. I'm so glad he didn't pee!
